Digital-to-analog converter characteristics

The B2 Bluetooth speaker system utilizes the TI PCM5102A DAC, widely know for it's low noise and high fidelity. Due to the PCM5102A's high signal-to-noise specs, the fact that digital signal is converted (upsampled) to 24-bits and the added benefit of triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the B2 presents impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics with a noticeable improvement over other Bluetooth speakers.

Extended wireless range

Most Bluetooth speakers have very limited range, usually within just one room. But with careful signal management circuitry and antenna tuning, we offer a superior solution that will reach more than one room with no degradation in audio quality.

High quality Bluetooth audio

The B2 features aptX coding which is an advanced Bluetooth audio codec that provides much higher-quality sound than previous versions. The B2 is backwards-compatible with all previous Bluetooth implementations so you can wirelessly stream music from any device and still enjoy outstanding sound.

Custom-built audio components

Audioengine designs and manufactures our own tweeters, woofers, and many other critical components. In other words, these are not "box built" speakers with off-the-shelf parts but entirely designed to our specifications. What we do not fabricate directly in our factories we have custom-made to our specifications (parts such as toroidal transformers, magnets, and wiring harnesses, for example). The speaker cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and crossovers are all painstakingly tuned together for each Audioengine model. This, in turn, makes for a much more efficient system that requires much less power than traditional AV stereo receivers and passive speakers.

Based on studio monitor designs

Studio monitor speakers are used by producers and engineers in recording and production studios. They are designed with a theoretical flat frequency response which allows the engineer to create a final mix in such a way that the recorded music will sound good on most other speakers. Although Audioengine speakers are not designed to be up-close "nearfield" studio monitors, we do carry over much of the same higher-end technology, components, and design philosophy for all Audioengine speaker systems.

Drivers

Audioengine uses audiophile-quality, ferro fluid cooled, silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters hold up well under high power and the edge-driven design gives very smooth response. The custom woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. Kevlar is obviously very strong, which means that the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The speaker materials and construction are very robust, therefore speaker grills aren’t needed. In other words, we did our homework on the speaker drivers and they will sound and look great after many years of use.

Cabinet

To minimize unwanted resonances and distortion, Audioengine cabinets have thick high-resin MDF walls with extensive internal bracing. Heavy internal sound-damping material is also used to reduce unwanted sound reflections inside the cabinet. The B2 cabinet is a unique design in that it has dual sub-enclosures to prevent cross-interference, while each side contains its own tuned, front-port bass slot.

Power amplifier

The class A/B amplifiers in Audioengine speaker systems are very conservatively-rated analog designs. Each subsystem is tuned together for all models, providing a much more efficient system requiring less power than passive speakers and separate amplifiers. An auto-standby idle mode is also included to conserve power when you're not playing music.

Shielding

Both drivers are magnetically-shielded which allows protection for CRT displays and hard-drive music players.

Just how easy is it to set up the Audioengine B2?

Very simple!
Connect the power cable to B2 rear panel and plug into an AC outlet.
Turn on the power switch and B2 will automatically go into pair mode.
On your device, turn on Bluetooth and select “Audioengine B2” to pair and connect.
Play your music. Setup is really this easy.

Why does the B2 have the volume control on the rear panel?

The goal was to make the smallest speakers possible with the largest sound and the front port slot takes up all the extra space on the front panel so no room for a volume knob. Most people set the B2 volume and then control the overall volume with their music source (computer, phone, TV, etc.).

When I connect a turntable to my B2, why is the volume is extremely low?

Some turntables may not have a built-in preamp and you would need to add an external phono preamp to bring the instrument level signal of the turntable to line-level. Some turntables may have a built-in preamp but have a switch on the back for either "line" or "phono," such as the Music Hall USB-1 or the Audio Technica AT-LP120; the switch would need to be selected to "line" in order to work directly with the speakers.

How can such small speakers have so much clean-sounding, deep, tight bass?

One of the reasons Audioengine speakers have such amazing low end in such small packages is the design of the bass ports on each speaker. These aren’t just holes or slots in the cabinets, but specifically shaped openings with internal guides designed from precise calculations. The result is incredible low end with minimal audible air turbulence. These are effectively mini-subs built into each speaker, allowing Audioengine speakers to be used with or without a separate subwoofer. It's also worth mentioning that we don’t use any enhancement circuits to add fake bass, so what you’ll hear is real bass - low and clean.

If I connect my Audioengine speakers to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other music player, what volume level should I set on the player and speakers and what is the ideal overall volume level on the music source to get the cleanest distortion-free sound?

Every setup is different but we generally recommend leaving your speaker volume at around 11 or 12 o'clock and then using your music source (iPod, computer, TV, etc.) as the master volume control.

Can I take my Audioengine speakers to another country with a different voltage?

Yes, you can. The B2 speaker system uses an interenal switching power supply so it will automatically convert to different voltages. The power cable is also detachable which makes it convenient to replace the AC plug with a different type if you don’t want to use an adapter plug.

Is the B2 designed only for use with Bluetooth devices?

There is an auxiliary input on the rear panel so you can directly connect any product with an audio output.

Is the B2 compatible with TIDAL music streaming service?

The short answer is yes! You can use TIDAL on any compatible source device (PC, Mac, iPhone Android, etc.). The B2 is compatible with most all of these devices as well since they almost universally also include Bluetooth.

OK, so If I can use the B2 with TIDAL, how come you're not listed on TIDALs website?

From what we understand the devices listed on TIDAL’s website are network media servers with the TIDAL app already installed on their operating systems, that’s all. No difference in audio quality or anything else as compared to their downloadable app, just that TIDAL comes pre-installed on those devices. The only notable exception is that if you're listening to TIDAL on a computer, the only web browser that supports the full audio quality is Google Chrome.

Since the B2 has multiple inputs, can I connect my phone via Bluetooth and also connect my computer to the aux input on the rear panel?

Yes, you can have two sources connected at the same time with no need to flip any switches. Simply play audio from the source you wish to hear through the B2.

Do Audioengine speakers have an auto-sleep, idle, or auto-power-off function? Can I leave them on all the time?

The B2 has an "idle mode" which activates right after you stop playing music. And yes, due to this power-saving feature we recommend leaving your speakers on.

What is the AC power cable type for Audioengine powered speakers?

We use non-polarized 2-Pin IEC 240-C7 cables. These are fairly standard cables, and you should be able to find them locally if needed. You can also find them in the Accessories section in our store.

Can I use a power inverter with Audioengine speakers?

Sure, for B2 you will need an inverter that can supply approximately 50 to 60 watts.

If I connect my turntable to the B2 will it be necessary to purchase a phono preamp or can I simply connect the turntable directly to the B2 analog audio input?

Some turntables will need a preamp before being connected and others are OK, therefore it is best to try your turntable without the preamp first to see how it operates.

Will my music have a delay through the B2 if I’m watching a movie or music video?

Bluetooth has a delay of about 30ms (milliseconds) so you can watch videos from Youtube, for example, and stream out the audio through B1 to your stereo system without any noticeable lag between the video and audio.

If B2 is paired and connected to my phone, do I need to do anything else to play music?

Once your B2 is paired and connected then any app (iTunes, Amarra, etc.) - or online players such as Youtube - it will automatically play your music through Bluetooth.

Do I need to install any special software apps or drivers for the B2?

No extra software or drivers are needed. The B2 is compatible with any device that supports Bluetooth, and the A2DP profile for streaming stereo audio. This includes most smartphones, tablets, and computers.

What if my source doesn't support aptX? Can I still use B2 and if so, how will it sound?

You can absolutely still use the B2 and it will sound great. AptX is a high-quality Bluetooth audio codec that works really well. In addition to mandatory support for SBC, Bluetooth also includes optional support for many other codecs, like MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and AAC, all of which have their own advantages, and some of which sound very close to AptX.

What does the white indicator light on the B2 rear panel mean?

- If it's on and solid, this means the B2 is powered on, and currently connected to a Bluetooth-enabled device.
- If it's on and blinking, this means the B2 is powered on but not currently connected to a device.
- If it's off (and B2 is powered on), this means Bluetooth is in standby and not connected to a device. The B2, however, is still visible to your device, so simply connect using your device and it will automatically wake up.

Will the B2’s wireless range work between more than one room inside my house?

The overall range you can expect will vary depending on the device you use with the B2. We tested using mostly a variety of smartphones though, and found 30 to 40 feet to be a realistic expectation through one or two walls and 100ft or more in an open space.

Can I use my computer speakers and the B2 at the same time?

If you have a Mac running snow leopard or later, you can create a multiple output device to accomplish this. See the link below for how-to instructions on Apple’s site:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5178

What makes Audioengine wireless Bluetooth speakers and receivers better than other Bluetooth systems?

Some of the features we feel make our products better are overall ease of setup, high-quality audio components and design, as well as high interference tolerance - all the good stuff that's important for a wireless product to be of any real use. The B2 also features a higher signal-to-noise ratio due to the inclusion of a 24-bit high-performance DAC and much better range than most Bluetooth products.

Will I get buzz from the speakers if I place my smartphone near my Audioengine speakers?

All Audioengine speakers are video and magnetically-shielded, however "GSM buzz” cannot be blocked by magnetic shielding. What actually causes GSM buzz is the phone being in 2G or "EDGE" instead of 3G. For best results when using your iPhone as a music source, ensure that it's operating on 3G by going to "Settings/General/Network/Enable 3G".
